Statement of Openness and Affirmation
Kairos-Milwaukie United Church of Christ is a community of faithful people who have known the joy of having been loved, accepted and affirmed by God. We are a community that celebrates our diversity as a way to understand and respond to the inclusiveness of God's love and the wideness of God's mercy.
We are many individuals, yet we are one body in Jesus Christ. The teachings of Jesus are the foundation upon which we build our ministry and the base from which we seek to act justly, love mercy and walk humbly in the world. We work together in the light of our faith in Jesus Christ to develop, celebrate and lift up relationships that are rooted in love, nurture, respect, and trust. We believe that human sexuality is a gift of God that enriches our lives and deeply touches the sacred in each person. We believe sexual expressions of love and nurturing are one way through which we experience the grace and tenderness of God.
We celebrate the image of God in every person. We affirm all relationships founded on the biblical principles of love and justice. We welcome, value and support all persons as reflections of the sacred design of Creation, regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, or physical or mental ability. We acknowledge that the household of God is comprised of single persons, gay and lesbian families, transgender and transsexual persons, single-parent families, two-parent families and extended families.
We are active, vocal advocates for peace and justice in the world. Therefore, we reject and oppose all acts of discrimination, hatred, and violence directed against any person, whether physical, emotional, social, economic, political, legal or spiritual.
We affirm that all persons are welcome in the community of Kairos-Milwaukie United Church of Christ and graciously accept the gifts, talents, and energies that every person brings to the life, liturgy and leadership of our congregation.
We, the members of Kairos-Milwaukie United Church of Christ, therefore, declare ourselves to be an Open and Affirming Church, in response to the call of the 15th General Synod of the United Church of Christ.
